Consultant Developer – Procedural Programming / Legacy Systems

Your day to day

  • Work within an agile and collaborative development environment, closely collaborating with Product Owners, Business Analysts and other developers
  • Design, develop, test, deploy and monitor software solutions within a business-critical application environment
  • Develop and maintain applications using procedural programming languages, such as COBOL
  • Work with non-relational databases and indexed files
  • Provide technical support to business teams and contribute to the continuous improvement of existing applications
  • Take ownership of specific areas of the application landscape and progressively develop strong technical expertise
  • Participate in code reviews, pair programming and knowledge sharing to support the development of other team members
  • Contribute to technical and architectural decisions, while being able to explain and justify proposed solutions
  • Collaborate with developers from other teams to improve systems, processes and overall technical efficiency
  • Contribute to the modernisation of legacy applications and the adoption of new technologies
  • Work with APIs, event-driven architectures and other modern development approaches when relevant
  • Communicate project progress clearly and provide realistic estimates of remaining work

Your profile

  • Solid experience in procedural programming, ideally with COBOL or a similar language
  • Proven experience working with non-relational databases and indexed files
  • Good understanding of the full software development lifecycle, from design and development through testing, deployment and monitoring
  • Ability to contribute to and challenge software architecture and technical design decisions
  • Experience with code reviews, pair programming and technical mentoring
  • Strong interest in the Life Insurance / Insurance industry
  • Good understanding of modern software development practices and continuous improvement principles
  • Familiarity with object-oriented or functional programming and modern technologies
  • Knowledge of event-driven programming / Event Sourcing is an advantage
  • Experience with Kafka is a plus
  • Knowledge of REST APIs and JSON-API standards is appreciated
  • Knowledge of MongoDB or other non-relational databases is an advantage
  • Familiarity with functional programming languages, such as Scala, is a plus
  • Experience with continuous deployment and monitoring tools such as Kubernetes, Jenkins, Instana or Sentry is an advantage
  • Good knowledge of Git or another version control system
  • Experience with unit testing frameworks
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, cross-functional environment
  • Proactive, autonomous and willing to continuously learn and develop technical expertise
